as readers, we rely on text and ignore the shifts in language. this graphic represents a different way of telling a story by ignoring the text and focusing on the syntax of words within a story. different parts of speech such as verbs, nouns, prepositions, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, adjectives, and indefinite articles are color coded. the syntax of the language forms interesting patterns. by omitting the text and focusing instead on how the story is structured visually, we can see how the writer chooses to arrange the language on the page, and a formula begins to emerge. the syntax and the choice of words are apparent even they are being represented by mere color blocks. this project explores the importance of the visual and structural aspects of writing that are so often overlooked in the analysis of such work. it’s a non-linear way of telling a story.
